HSE Boys Track & Field Shines at Sectionals with 2nd Place Finish

The Hamilton Southeastern Royals delivered a powerful team performance at the IHSAA Boys Track & Field Sectional meet on May 22, scoring 111 points to earn an impressive 2nd place finish in a competitive field. The Royals showcased depth across events—highlighted by five event wins and numerous state advancement qualifications. Event Champions Christian Ortiz took home gold in the 400m dash (50.09), dominating the field with a strong closing kick. Liam Powers claimed the 3200m title with a blazing 9:12.68, leading wire-to-wire in an elite distance field. Sam Long had a standout night, winning the 300m hurdles in 39.45 and placing 2nd in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.73 to advance in both events. The 4x800m relay team of Will Henning, Omar Elsayed, Liam McNiven, and Mason Schmitz kicked off the meet with a win in 8:00.23. Evan Senefeld had a solid evening clearing 14' for the win in the pole vault. Key Scorers and Top Finishes The 4x400m relay (Mott, Wanza, Lewis, Elsayed) stormed to a 2nd place finish in 3:23.50. Sam Long and Hadi Tebanja combined for 15 points in the hurdles, with Long winning the 300s and Tebanja placing 4th (41.69) for a personal best. Deacon Lewis joined Ortiz for a strong 1-3 punch in the 400m, contributing 6 points with a 51.11 finish. In the sprints, senior Tyler Tholen (6th in the 200m, 22.78) and Christian Ortiz (8th, 23.71) both scored in the final. Liam Boyd placed 8th in the 100m finals (11.68) and added a 7th-place jump in the long jump (20’ 7.5”), while also anchoring the 4x100m relay to a 3rd place finish with teammates Wanza, Ortiz, and Weston in 42.16. Dylan James leapt 21’10” in the long jump to earn 3rd place. In the high jump, Chris Beck cleared 6'2" for 4th, with teammate Julian Wilder placing 8th (5'10"). Mason Schmitz placed 8th in the 800m (1:59.01), doubling back after the 4x800 win. Isaac Smith added critical points in the 3200m, finishing 5th with a huge PR of 9:20.20. Zach Swedarsky and Ben Tuckis ran strong in the 1600m, finishing 10th and 12th respectively. KJ Mallett, a freshman, impressed in the discus with a 6th place throw of 139’11”, and also threw 43’1.5” in the shot put. Jordan Futch earned 8th place in the shot put (44’11.5”) to cap off scoring in the throws. With 111 total points, the Royals’ team effort was on full display—balancing solid performances with scoring depth across all event areas. Multiple athletes and relays advance to the IHSAA Regional Meet on May 29th at Lafayette Jefferson, where they’ll compete for a chance to qualify for the state finals.
